See Kamehameha's Heiau
This luau is held on historic Ahuʻena – Kamehameha the Greatʻs former estate - the traditional lands of Kamakahonu (eye of the turtle). Regarded as one of the most historic sites in Hawai‘i, it was the final residence of Kamehameha the Great, where he spent his last years and ultimately passed away. Near the site on the eastern side of Ahu'ena, there was a canoe entrance where canoes could approach the shore directly in front of the hale. The site holds significant cultural importance as the location where a feast was held to commemorate the abolition of the kapu system, marking a pivotal moment in Hawaiian history.
A community-based committee, Ahu'ena Heiau Inc., was formed in 1993 to guide this national treasure's permanent restoration and maintenance.
